Kelly is experienced in the management of Osteoporosis and Osteopenia

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones can become thin, weak and fragile, due to low bone density. Osteopenia is a condition when bone mineral density is lower than normal but not low enough to be classified as osteoporosis.

Physical activity, including both strength and cardiovascular exercise, can improve bone mineral density by stimulating bone growth and slowing the process of degeneration. Balance is also an important aspect to physical conditioning for Osteoporosis, ensuring that a fall or bump due to poor balance doesn’t result in a fracture.

Your initial assessment will include:
Discussion of your current and past medical history
Discussion and creation of particular goals and outcomes that we can work towards
Assessment of current strength and fitness which may include:
Short walking test to assess cardiovascular fitness
A combination of strength and balance tests to assess function
Additional power, range of motion and agility tests
Creation of a management plan which will be emailed through following your appointment

Subsequent consultations will include:

Pre- and post-exercise physiological measurements if appropriate (e.g. blood pressure, heart rate, blood glucose)
Delivery of an individualised program consisting of cardiovascular, strength-based exercises to improve overall function
Balance, proprioception and walking exercises if appropriate and in line with your goals
Re-assessment of measures taken at your initial consultation to track your progress
