The hip plays an important role in posture and locomotion. As the hip joint is a ball and socket joint, this allows a wide variety of movements in multiple planes. The extensive range of motion available at the hip requires that we have sufficient ligamentous and muscle stability supporting the joint as it is the second biggest weight-bearing joint after the knee. The hip joint works very closely with the pelvis, sacrum and lower back, and there are many muscles and ligaments joining these areas together.

Hip pain is ?, however different conditions are seen more in those who play certain sports, in particular age groups and ?. For example osteoarthritis and tendinopathy in older people, pelvic girdle pain and gluteal tendinopathy in females, and snapping hip syndrome in young dancers.
