Did you know our Exercise Physiologists can prescribe exercise to help with arthritic conditions?
Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of a joint, which can lead to pain, stiffness and reduced range of motion. Symptoms may come and go, and can be anything from mild discomfort to pain that affects your daily activities.
But there is good news! Physical activity is a gold-standard treatment for all types of arthritis.
Exercise improves joint mobility and flexibility, muscular strength and balance as well as assisting in decreasing fatigue, pain and inflammation. Evidence suggests that regular structured exercise under the supervision of an Exercise Physiologist is one of the most effective forms of treatment for arthritis.
To start your arthritis management journey, your Exercise Physiologist will get to know what your goals are and the things you’d love to be able to get back to doing. After this, we will conduct some functional assessments to test things like your range of motion, strength, balance, power, agility or walking fitness.
From here, with our goals in mind, we prescribe you an individualised exercise program that will get you underway to doing the things you love without discomfort. This will usually look like an 8-week block of once weekly supervised exercise in either an individual or group setting. After this initial 8 weeks, you will see changes in your function, and then have the option to continue the individual or group based sessions, or be prescribed your own home-based or gym-based program based on your preferences.
