Are you experiencing Pregnancy Pains?
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) or Pregnancy Related Pelvic Pain (PRPP) are the terms used to describe pain in the areas of the pelvic joints during pregnancy. This includes areas from the top of the buttock down to the back of the thigh as well as the pubic bones. Activities and positions such as walking, standing and sitting become limited due to discomfort.
Many hormonal and biomechanical changes occur during the body throughout pregnancy, which can be a challenge to the lower back and pelvis. The hormone relaxin increases laxity in the ligaments of the pelvic joints which allows a small increase in the amount of movement in preparation for birth and labour. The continuing change in weight and pelvis positioning, causes the centre of gravity to move forwards which promotes more extension in the lower back. This can lead to pain if there is insufficient strength and motor control to compliment these changes.
Treatment for PGP or PRPP aims to maximise function and health throughout pregnancy with an individualised program and may include:
Strengthening and motor control exercises for the abdominal, spinal, gluteal and pelvic floor muscles
Engaging in regular physical activity
Manual therapy and massage
