Did you know our Exercise Physiologists can prescribe exercise to help with mental health?

You probably already know how good exercise is for your physical body. But did you know just how effective exercise can be in improving your mood and sleep, as well as helping to manage mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and stress?

Exercise not only helps to improve the strength of your muscles or your lung capacity, but it also plays the very important role of giving you a sense of well-being. Being physically active regularly can help in a number of ways, including:

  • Boosting your mood
  • Relieving feelings of stress
  • Improving your mental acuity/sharpness
  • Improving your sleep quality
  • Increasing overall energy
  • Help control weight gain induced by medication
  • Improve social connection and relationships with others
  • Improves chronic disease outcomes, e.g. Type II Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease etc.

An individualised exercise intervention prescribed by an Exercise Physiologist is an important consideration in the management of mental wellbeing. When getting started, we will consider what your physical or functional goals are, and conduct some assessments of your current condition, such as things like your range of motion, strength, balance, power, agility or walking fitness.

From here, you will work alongside your Exercise Physiologist individually for 6-8 weeks, and then have the option to continue individual sessions, join into a class or link into some other community fitness providers to sustain the physical progress you would have already made.

Every 3 months, you will have a check-in session with your Exercise Physiologist to re-assess your progress and update your Target Physio management plan as you look toward the next 3 months.
