Chronic Primary Hypertension is defined by the Seventh Report of Joint National Committee (JNC7) on the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure as ‘having a resting systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140mm Hg and/or a resting diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90 mm Hg’ (ACSM, 2021).

Of the greatest contributors to cardiovascular disease and premature mortality, hypertension accounts for 95% of all cases, in which physical inactivity is the primary risk factor (ACSM, 2021).

Target Physio Exercise Physiologists have developed a structured 3-stage Hypertension program, offering one-on-one and group exercise training programs targeting lowering blood pressure through the week.

Our goal for clients on the Hypertension program is to treat and help you lower your blood pressure to a consistent systolic blood pressure goal of <140 mmHg and a diastolic blood pressure goal of <90 mmHg. Lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure targets, such as <130/80 mmHg, may be appropriate for individuals at high risk of cardiovascular disease. In doing so, we can assist you in reaching the National Physical Activity Guidelines to prevent further chronic illnesses.

Stage 1 Assessment and Treatment Development Stage

This is the ‘getting started’ stage.
As part of your assessment consultation, we screen you for hypertension by measuring blood pressure in the clinic.
If a value above 120/80 mmHg is recorded, for your safety we refer on to your doctor and other health professionals for further investigations and non-medical and medical confirmation.

Your assessment consultation with your Exercise Physiologist will consist of your initial functional and fitness assessments being conducted and your Exercise Physiologist develop a home-based and/or gym exercise program to suit your physical ability and schedule – we want you to be able to fit your program into your busy life as well as enjoy doing it!

Stage 2 – Supervised Exercise Treatment Stage

Stage 2 is building stage – build on whatever fitness you have in a safe, controlled and supervised environment.
After you’ve progressed from Stage 1, you begin an 8-week training block with your Exercise Physiologist. Target Physio offers a 8-week Hypertension Group Training Program as a more cost-effective option, however you may wish to continue one-on-one with your Exercise Physiologist, which is most certainly still an option.

The Training Program Stage consists of 8-sessions (either group-based or individual) incorporating aerobic, strength and balance exercises to challenge you and your fitness in a safe environment.

Stage 3 – Long Term Followup

The final stage is designed to ensure you stay on track and your blood pressure doesn’t creep back up again!
Once you’ve completed your training program, you’re not forgotten! Your Exercise Physiologist will continue to work with you, on a less regular basis to monitor your blood pressure levels, your fitness and overall health condition.
